Biography

Mrs. L. Walker

I am a graduate of Duncanville High School, where I blazed the trail as the 1st African American Varsity cheerleader.  I furthered my education, earning a BBA in Management and Marketing from the prestigious Baylor University in Waco, TX.  My post-graduate work towards an educational certificate in Spanish was completed at the University of Texas at Arlington, which is when I began my teaching career as a Spanish teacher.

At the start of this 2019-2020 school year, I was presented with the opportunity to teach AVID and, elated at the honor to assist our scholars, I accepted.  So, I began my 26th year in a new role and I am still loving it!  My business background as well as my ability to communicate in two languages are proving to be essential assets to matriculating our scholars through their high school careers and on to the next level.  Please know that as I navigate the accessible resources for my scholars, I will share them as well as open up the opportunity for them to take those resources and expand them for the benefit of others.

My AVID scholars are an elite group and will flourish at their highest potential.

Additionally,  I have the privilege of coaching a group of scholars as the advisor for the Junior State of America (J.S.A.) debate team.  Our delegation travels to 3 debate competitions per academic year ranging from Austin, Washington DC, Los Angeles and/or Houston.  There are a wide range of worldly topics chosen by individual debaters to research and present as they compete for the award of Best Speaker in their individual debates.  This special honor is voted on by their peers.  We brought home 4 of those highly prestigious awards within the past two academic years and are striving for even greater numbers going forward.  It is a privilege to watch these young debaters gain confidence in public speaking while educating themselves on issues that exist in today's society.
